Make sure to check your receipt before you leave the store

You don’t want to go through all the work of saving money on groceries, only to discover that you accidentally paid more than you should have for something. There’s one thing I do as I’m getting ready to walk out the door of the grocery store. I double check my receipt. I make sure all my coupons went through and that I paid the correct price of the items that were on sale. There have been times when I’ve made a mistake in how many items I was supposed to buy to get the sale price. Or I grabbed the wrong size box and was charged a different price.

Using coupons with a sale

Another way to save extra money on groceries is to use a coupon on an item that is also on sale. That is like doubling your savings.

Here is a savings scenario I had at my local grocery store. Campbell soup was on sale for 49 cents a can if you bought 10 cans. I also had a coupon for $1.00 off of 8 cans. So by purchasing 10 cans and using the coupon, I was able to get them for 39 cents a can. That is at least 20 cents cheaper than the regular price of the store brand of condensed soup. I use Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken soup in certain recipes, so it was worth stocking up.

Use cash back or points apps

There are many apps out there that will give you cash back or points just for taking a picture of your receipt after you go shopping. This is a great way to earn money on things that you already buy like gas and groceries. There are a few of these types of apps I use. Every time I come home from grocery shopping, I upload my receipts to the apps and sit back and watch my points grow. I save my points up all year and transfer them to Amazon gift cards to use on Christmas presents. These are the receipt apps that I use:

  • Fetch – use code G7WVQ to get a bonus when you submit your first receipt.
  • Receipt Pal
  • Receipt Hog – use code rat10811 to get a bonus when you submit your first receipt.
  • Coin Out – use code 7Z9HFE7 to get a bonus when you submit your first receipt.
  • Upside – this app is for cash back on purchases at restaurants and gas stations. We usually get at least a few dollars back in the app each time we fill up at a gas station that’s offered with Upside. Use referral code 7AJA5 to get an extra 15% cash back on your first purchase.

Grocery Store Rewards System

If your local grocery store has a rewards system, you should definitely be using it and benefitting from all its perks. Sometimes they will offer coupons on items that you purchase regularly. They might offer points towards saving money on fuel at your local gas station. You might even get a rewards rebate every few months. Whatever it is, be sure to take advantage of this easy way to save money.

Buy in bulk

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy in larger quantities. If there are items that you buy multiples of, check to see if they have larger packs. Often the price of the package of 4 is less than if you would have bought 4 of that item separately. If you were going to buy several of that item anyway, then it’s cheaper for you to purchase the 4 pack.

Also make sure to check the price per unit of items. Take a package of tortillas for instance. You might have the option to buy a package of 10 or a package of 20. The package of 10 costs $1.70 so the price per unit is .17. The package of 20 is on sale for $2.40 so the price per unit is .12. So it is cheaper to buy the package of 20. This works well for items that you use all the time and will last longer in your pantry or freezer.
