Make sure to check your receipt before you leave the store

You don’t want to go through all the work of saving money on your groceries only to discover that you accidentally paid more than you should have for an item. As I’m getting ready to walk out the door of the grocery store, I always look over my receipt to make sure all my coupons went through and that I paid the sale price of the items that were on sale. There have been a few times where I made one little tiny mistake in how many items I was supposed to buy to get the sale price, or I grabbed the wrong size box and was charged a different price.

Recently there was a sale scenario at my local store called “Buy 10, Save $5”. They had several different items on sale and if you bought 10 of these participating items you saved $5. I bought 20 items so I should have saved $10. As I was checking my receipt, I noticed that some of the items weren’t showing the sale price I should have paid. I was confused, especially since I had worked very hard to make sure I had gotten all the items I needed and the right quantity to get them at the sale price. I went to the customer service desk and had the lady there look over my receipt with me. We discovered one of the bags of pasta I purchased was not one of the ones that was on sale. Someone had put it on back in the wrong spot on the shelf and that’s the one I happened to grab. So this one wrong item threw everything off. I ended up returning the bag of pasta and the customer service lady gave me a $5 gift card. Like I said, it is definitely worth double checking your receipt. If you nicely explain the situation, the store is usually more than willing to help you out and try to get you your savings.

Using coupons with a sale

Another way to save extra money on groceries is to use a coupon on an item that is also on sale. That is like doubling your savings.

Here is another savings scenario I had at my local grocery store. Campbell soup was on sale for 49 cents a can if you bought 10 cans. I also had a coupon for $1.00 off of 8 cans. So by purchasing 10 cans and using the coupon, I was able to get them for 39 cents a can. That is at least 20 cents cheaper than the regular price of the store brand of condensed soup. And Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken soup is something that I will definitely use in my recipes over the next few months so it was worth it to stock up.

Use the Ibotta app

The Ibotta app is a way for you to earn cash back on items that you already buy. You simply search for offers from your favorite stores, select the items you will buy, and then take a picture of your receipt once you’ve gone shopping. You will receive your cash back in the app within 24 hours. Once you reach $20 can transfer your cash to a PayPal account or to your choice of the gift cards they offer. There are offers from hundreds of grocery and other retail stores and online stores, including Amazon. Click on the link below to download the app.

Grocery Store Rewards System

If your local grocery store has a rewards system, you should definitely be using it and benefitting from all its perks. Sometimes they will offer coupons on items that you purchase regularly. They might offer points towards saving money on fuel at your local gas station. You might even get a rewards rebate every few months. Whatever it is, be sure to take advantage of this easy way to save money.

Buy in bulk

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy in larger quantities. If there are items that you buy multiples of like yogurt cups, granola bars, baby food, etc., check to see if they have larger packs of them. Often the price of the package of 4 is less than if you would have bought 4 of that item separately. If you were going to buy several of that item anyway, then it’s cheaper for you to purchase the 4 pack.

Also make sure to check the price per unit of items. Take a package of tortillas for instance. You might have the option to buy a package of 10 or a package of 20. The package of 10 costs $1.70 so the price per unit is .17. The package of 20 is on sale for $2.40 so the price per unit is .12. So it is cheaper to buy the package of 20. This works well for items that you use all the time and will last a little longer in your pantry or freezer.
