Menu planning is a life saver for me. I literally couldn’t cook dinner or grocery shop without doing a menu plan for the week. When I’m cooking dinner, I like having a list of meals to choose from each day of the week and knowing that I have the ingredients in the house to make those meals. Some people plan out what they are having for dinner each day that week. I like having a little more freedom than that. Sometimes our schedule changes during the week and one night I might need a faster, easier meal to make. You can do what works best for you and your family.
I also learned a couple of tricks to make meal planning even easier. I used to spend hours browsing through my recipe books and Pintrest, trying to get inspired and find recipes to add to my menu list for the week. It worked, but it was very time consuming and I was starting to dread meal planning. I decided to create a list of meals that included our favorites to eat, ones I liked to cook and ones that we didn’t mind including in the meal rotation.
I came up with a list of about 25 meals for dinner. I keep this list in the notes on my phone. Every time I make a certain meal, I put the date we ate it next to the recipe name. I keep the dates for the last few times that we had that meal. So when I’m making my weekly menu plan and looking at my list of meals; I can see that it’s been a month since we had that meal so it’s ok to add it to the menu for this week. It is just so much easier to have a list of dinner meals to choose from and it makes menu planning go so much faster. I will still browse through my recipe books or Pintrest every once in a while for some new inspiration. And if we like the new recipe that I try, it goes on my meal list.
I do my meal plan once a week. You can do the same or do it for every two weeks or once a month. I make a list of meals to cook for dinner that week and add the ingredients I need to buy to my grocery list. This also helps in going to the store less often during the week. I do my major grocery shopping at one of my local stores one night a week. This includes most of the grocery items that we buy and eat during the week. My other local store has specific items I like to buy and good sales on items I purchase regularly so I will shop there on a different day. So unless we unexpectedly run out of something or crave a certain snack, I usually only go to the store twice a week. That definitely helps save money in the grocery budget.
See how menu planning can change your life. It takes a little time and work at first, but then you will find the rest of your week a lot less stressful. No more wracking your brain to try to figure out what to make for dinner last minute. You can customize your plan to what works best for you. You can make lists or do it in a calendar format. You can even create a menu board in your kitchen so everyone can see what’s for dinner.
Love to meal plan. I do it once a week and helps tremendously.
Yes, it makes my life so much easier! 😊
That’s a great idea! I’m still trying out too many new plant-based anti-inflammatory recipes to actually do this, but when I get 25 or so, this looks like something I would love to do. 😊
Thank you! Yes, that’s another nice thing about having a list is you know that you like those recipes. 😊
Love this, I’m working on getting up to a week planned. I never seem to make it past 4 or 5 days though before needing to get to the store for something or other.
Thank you! There are times when I need to run to the store again, but having the meal plan definitely helps. I still struggle with planning weekend meals sometimes, so I’m trying to get better about that. 😊
Way to be organized and prepared! I need more of this in my meal planning sometimes.
Thank you! Yes, I’m learning that a little preparation in the beginning helps in the long run. 😊
Great meal plan! Sometimes I get bored so I love to read other meal plans!! Thanks!
Thank you for reading and commenting!
Ugh, I agree that this makes life so much easier! I struggle to force myself to plan but each time I do it is so worth it.
Yes, I used to dread it too, but having my list to refer to has definitely made it easier. 😊
I would love to be a meal planner but I just don’t know why I do not start! But these are great tips! A little closer! lol
It’s pretty easy once you get into it. One step at a time! 😊
I need to try this out!!! I feel like we always are eating the same thing lol!
Yes, I love having a list to refer to when I’m struggling to think of things to put on the menu plan for the week. This has made it so much easier. 😊
Menu planning definitely helps a lot! In saving money and time. Thank you for sharing!
It sure does! Thank you for reading and commenting!
We do weekly menu planning as well! It’s so much easier going to the store just once rather than go back every day.
Yes I agree!Thank you for reading and commenting!
I usually just plan for a day or two… i really should start planning out longer. Thanks!
It really is easy once you get used to doing it. 😊 Thank you for reading and commenting!
Great tips for meal planning. I never thought about tracking them on my phone!
Thank you! Yes, I keep notes for everything else on my phone, so I thought “Why not keep my meal list on there too?” And I use a grocery list app too, so this way I can jump back and forth between them when I’m meal planning.
I menu plan off the sales ads so I shop on Tuesdays. I compare this weeks ad to next week’s ad so I usually have my menu planning scheduled about two weeks apart.
That sounds like a great way to do it. I might need to change the day I do my grocery shopping because one of my local stores started doing their ads on Wednesdays. And meal planning plus buying sale items sounds like double savings to me! 😊
I always do so much better with cooking every day when I actually make a meal plan. It gets easier with time! I totally agree about being more flexible with your plan.
Thank you! Yes it definitely gets easier and now I don’t know how I did it before I meal planned. 😊
Always looking for new ways to plan meals! Great ideas!
Thank you!
Great post! I like meal planning too and trying out new recipes a couple of times a month. And like you I use the Notes section on my phone to keep an ongoing shopping list and to store recipes.
Thank you! I’m happy to hear there are fellow meal planners out there. 😊
Definitely a menu planner here too actually did it professionally for years! On a smaller scale now and it’s the best way to always know what you have on hand and to make sure that nothing goes to waste in the fridge or pantry. Thanks for sharing 🙂
That sounds like it would be a fun job. 😊 Thank you for reading and commenting!
I sure get what you mean when you talk about scouring Pinterest for meal ideas…. I’ve never been good at meal planning. Growing up, I’d watch my Mom write out her menu for the week and then make her grocery list…. my sister was good at doing this as well, but me, not so much. Great ideas!
Thank you! It does get easier once you find what works for you. 😊
That is a great idea to keep a list on your phone of when you last ate a meal so you can put it back into rotation!
Thank you! Yes it definitely makes meal planning easier. 😊
I have always been a huge fan of weekly meal planning, but haven’t been able to stick to it. Thanks for the tips and ideas…here’s hoping I can get this off the ground.
Thank you for reading and commenting! Once you find what works for you and can make it a habit,it gets easier. You’ve got this! 😊
