Meatballs are such a comfort food and they are a favorite meal in my family. My husband suffers from gout on occasion and since red meat can cause flare ups, we try to limit it as much as we can. He still loves meatballs though so I started looking for ways that he could enjoy them and not pay the price with a gout attack. I’ve started using ground turkey in the place of ground beef in a few different meals. I felt that the meatballs needed an extra kick of flavor so I decided to make them using ground sausage and ground turkey and they were a huge hit! My husband actually said that he liked them better than regular meatballs using ground beef. Another great thing about this meatball recipe is that it makes a huge batch, and the meatballs freeze really well. My husband loves these as leftovers, so we never have enough for the freezer, but if you have a smaller family you can freeze half the batch for a second meal at a later time.

These are fairly fast and easy to put together. We enjoy them with mashed potatoes and a cream sauce, but there are many ways you can use meatballs. With barbeque sauce, with spaghetti, meatball subs, the possibilities are endless.

To start you will need one pound each of ground sausage and ground turkey. Mix them together in a large bowl. Add 2 eggs, 1 cup of seasoned bread crumbs, 1 tsp garlic salt, 1 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp parsley flakes, 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce and mix well.

Form into 1 inch balls and place on a cookie sheet. You can make these as big or small as you’d like. I don’t measure them or form them into perfectly round balls, but they do cook more evenly if the are about the same size and not too big.

Meatballs ready to go in the oven!

Bake at 400 for 15 minutes, turning the meatballs occasionally. My husband likes them with a little crispy edge, so I only turn them once about halfway through cooking.

For the cream sauce melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a sauce pan. Add 2 tablespoons of flour. Mix together for a couple minutes till you have a nice rue. Add 1/2 cup of heavy cream, 1-2 cups of chicken broth, 1 tsp onion powder and 1 tsp garlic powder. Cook for a few minutes until sauce has thickened.

Enjoy with mashed potatoes and your favorite veggie side dish.
